Chickpeas, or garbanzo beans, have various health benefits due to its nutritive value. Like other legumes, chickpeas are rich in fibre, protein and other key vitamins and minerals.
How to cook
Dried chickpeas will approximately triple in size when cooked, so 1 cup of dried chickpeas will make about 3 cups of cooked chickpeas.
Long soak: Soak in plenty of cold water for 8 hours to overnight.
Quick soak: Add beans to a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and boil for 5 mins, take them off the heat and let sit for 1 hour.
- Drain soaking water and rinse well.
- Add beans to a large pot and cover with plenty of water. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 1.5-2 hours, depending on your desired tenderness.
Beans cooked with with the lid off will be more firm, perfect for salads or chilli. Beans cooked with the lid ajar will be creamier and easier to break apart, perfect for hummus.
