Silica gel is an amorphous and porous form of silicon dioxide (silica). It has a strong affinity for water molecules and is widely used as a desiccant. This silica gel will not change colour when saturated. Therefore, we recommend reheating the gel once per month.

How to Reactivate Silica Gel

  • Oven: 135°C for 1–2 hours per 900g of gel.

  • Microwave: Medium to medium-high setting for 3-5 mins. If the gel has not dried, stir it withy a spoon and heat it for another 3 to 5 minutes. Approximate drying time is 8 to 12 minutes per 500g of gel.


  • Use a very thick pyrex (glass) baking dish or metal baking tray to dry the gel. Do not use plastic for drying silica gel because the hot beads may cause the dish to melt.

  • Use adequate ventilation as a sensible precaution.

  • Silica gel gets very hot during the drying process.Do not transfer silica gel to another storage container until the gel has thoroughly cooled.

  • It is better to under-heat it, than overheat it. It is better to re-dry small batches than large batches. One indicator of overheated silica gel is the presence of black silica beads.
